Back from Lunch!
Thursday, August 21, 2008, 03:27 PM PST [General]
Hey Everyone, How's your day? I wrote a blog earlier, but lost it quickly to my computer crashing. I just got back from lunch with Dan, my best man. I haven't hung out with that guy in such a long while... We ate at a small Chinese-Like place off of campus... It was pretty good. Let me see if I can find the name... Ah, I can't find it, but it's next to the school. It's "Tea" something. It was nice because it was vegetarian-oriented. I had some tofu with rice and a small salad. Not bad. Since it was next to the Long Beach VA, we we sitting among MDs and such. It makes me think a bit about medicine... I'll be there in a few years. I read about a CRNA school which stated that there was a 1:10 chance of getting into their CRNA program, provided that the basics were met: I was relieved when I read that. I hope level of difficulty to enter CRNA program doesn't change for the worse. I think Jenny is happy about this, too. I'm also glad that what I've done since the age of 23 (getting my RN license), is still applicable and that I don't need to start over. I'm working on the DSC machine right now, all the curves are turning out well, with the excpetion of a little noise at the end of the run, but it's expected, I suppose. I had acid circulating in the machine and I just removed it out. Oh! I bought a wallet. Finally. I've been meaning to do so for such a long time, but haven't found the right one. I just want something thin, just enough to hold a few cards and cash. Not bad. My Baby's coming home tonight and for once, I am not off for work. I cherish these evenings. You'd think that since we moved in with one another we would see one another all the time. It's not always true. Sometimes we'd go three or four days, without seeing one another. It's funny, because I know exactly what she's doing right now at work: sitting at the computer desk and listening to NPR on her podcast. I've found the station in the car, 89.9. Since we don't have a tv at home, it's important we get our news from somewhere. I'm proud of my baby; she's so organized with everything. And with her composure, she could probably run for office, LOL! Anyway, this blog is more a ramble than anything else, so I'll collect my thought and write more later. That headline may come across as a little more arrogant than intended. Its basically a Jamaican saying to imply a surplus of a certain item - in this case Olympic gold medals for Jamaica. Bolt came out like a bolt from the blue - and his exhuberant celebration of his success has apparantly offended some American sports commentators among others. Its interesting to note that American sprint champions of the past have not been known for their wallflower-like qualities. No complaints were heard then. And in these Olymipics their 'USA! USA! USA!' chanting during the women's volleyball , their 'That's what I'm talking about!" comments (after winning the swimming relay by a hair's breadth against France) and no doubt many other jingoistic forms of behaiviour have also gone by without as much as a lifted eyebrow. So it is flattering in the extreme to find that efforts are being made to mar Jamaica's Bolt and our other athletes- questioning their level of sportsmanship, and also whether or not they are clean. Its a bit rich coming from a country which gave us Marion Jones and many others, both known and unknown. It is with deep regret that I watched the US 4*100 relay teams drop their batons - because I would have loved to watch Jamaica demolish them in the final - but also because its an awful thing to happen to any relay team. But watch. Should Jamaica - or any other country, win those relays, we will hear it is because the US did not participate. Meanwhile, fingers crossed for two more golds. Its been Jamaica's best Olympics ever. And Britain's too by the looks of it. May the good fortune continue!

Sportsmanship is alive and well and living in America
Thursday, August 21, 2008, 11:11 PM GMT [General]
In all the furore surrounding Usain Bolt's second record-breaking performance of the Olympics yesterday, another story slipped completely under the radar. Before the race, the cameras hovered over the American, Wallace Spearmon, in Lane 9. His second-round and semifinal races had been below-par, and there was even speculation he was carrying an injury. In the race itself, he went better than predicted and came in a respectable third. It seemed that by the time Spearmon crossed the line, Bolt was already surrounded by a gaggle of admirers snapping photos and jostling to talk to the champion. In the midst of all this, only a minute or so after crossing the line and taking delivery of a US flag, Spearmon charged over to where Bolt was standing, grabbed him in a bear-hug and hoisted him into the air with a shout of triumph. There's been a debate about sportsmanship at the Games over the last few days, with (admittedly restrained) criticism in the papers of Paul Goodison for his supposed gamesmanship in winning his gold, and criticism from the IOC about Bolt's behaviour after winning his medals in not shaking hands with his opponents. In the midst of all this, I found Spearmon's gesture quite touching, interrupting his own medal celebrations to congratulate emphatically the man- not even from his own team- who had run him off the track. Bolt, somewhat disappointingly, barely acknowledged him. Literally, as it turned out. In a sad twist, it emerged that Spearmon had trodden on the line during the race, which meant disqualification. The cameras caught his initial, stunned reaction when he was told soon after congratulating Bolt. Once the news had sunk in, he seemed to accept the decision, and walked dejectedly back towards the exit. As he made his way towards the tunnel, Spearmon spotted his team-mate Shawn Crawford, who, in light of Spearmon's disqualification, had just been promoted to bronze medallist, and tossed him the flag he had been given to celebrate his own medal.Only then did he leave the track. It's been a dismal Olympics for the Americans. But in a team (and nation) renowned for its super-competitive and uncompromising attitude it's uplifting to see that there's still a place for sportsmanship. There are several competitors who could learn a lesson about how to be a good loser here, and for that matter a good winner too. A great sporting performance is an inspiration, but it's the attitude that goes with it that's really touching: Freddie Flintoff comforting Brett Lee after the 2005 Edgbaston Test; Lutz Long giving long jump advice to Jesse Owens in 1936. It goes to show that although winning counts, there's a lot more to sport than that. I know that the defining images of this Olympics for posterity will be Phelps's medals, Usain Bolt's two amazing finishes, and, at least in Britain, the grinning faces of Chris Hoy and Ben Ainslie. But it would be nice if, somewhere in there, someone remembered Wallace Spearmon too. Baby Zuma Stefani?? PLEASE NO!!
